Think of this as a home improvement project. If you make enough time and do the right prep, you can get it done in a few hours. Otherwise, it gets spread out over days and becomes a huge source of stress.

1. Do your laundry

To make this work, it’s best to do ALL of your laundry — including what you wore this week — so that ALL of your clothes are clean and easily accessible for the cleanout.

2. Review the Your Style section

Look back at the 3 words that describe your style, your signature items, colors, plus your optimal number of items based on your lifestyle.

3. Put all clothes back

Once the laundry is done, put all those clothes (yes, ALL of them) back in your closet.

4. Take stock

Snap a “before” photo of your closet in all its overstuffed glory. Also, go ahead and count the number of clothing items you own (including shoes, but not accessories or coats) and write down the number in your Capsule Planner PDF.

5. Schedule time and ask a friend

A closet cleanout is a serious business—so we suggest scheduling 2-3 hours where you can grab a friend or partner to help keep you honest and motivated.
