3 Apps To Help You Shop Ethically

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a portable device to tell you if the clothes you are buying are made ethically or not? Turns out, there is! It’s called your smartphone. All you need to do is download one of these three apps and you are on to guilt free shopping (as long as you don’t go crazy on the quantity that is).

1.     Buycott

This app lets you select the “campaigns” that you care about for example they have different categories such as Food: GMO labeling, Social Responsibility: support the Code on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and Environment: support sustainable fishing. Just to name a few. This app has a barcode reader that allows you to scan items while you shop. When you scan the item the app will tell you if this item is aligned with the values that you previously selected. Pretty sweet, eh?

2.     aVOID (plug-in)

This one isn’t an app. It’s a plug-in for your browser that doesn’t show products made by manufactures who use child labor. You can switch the plug-in on and off so that you can see all products on a website. The app uses data from the advocacy group Active Against Child Labor to identify manufacturers who are associated with using child labor.

3.     Social Impact

The Social Impact app uses your location to show you retailers close to you where you can buy products that are made ethically. This is great for people who live in larger metropolitan areas. For those of you who do not, don’t sweat it you can still shop online. This isn’t strictly clothes related either. They have a range of categories from food to professional services to an everything category. You’re sure to find what you’re looking for.

We hope these apps make finding ethically made products faster and easier for you. Try them out and let us know which one works best for you and why. Or let us know if you have a trick to finding ethically made products of your own. We're all ears.
