What to Wear
There is great freedom in choosing what to wear uninhibited by the opinions of others.
And I believe the key to attaining this freedom lies in cultivating confidence.
Contrary to popular belief, we aren’t born with confidence. It’s not preordained. But confidence is certainly a universal desire when it comes to personal style. We all want to be the person who can walk out the door not caring about what others think.
There's a common misconception that skill alone creates confidence. But it’s not true.
Having knowledge about what’s on trend or the so-called fashion rules is not what makes you confident in what to wear. It’s in gaining a deeper understanding of what you do and do not like. Discovering the types of clothes that reflect your identity that allows you to begin owning your kind of authentic style. This isn’t about wearing whatever you want, whenever you want. Rather, it’s finding ways you align who you are on the inside with how you dress on the outside — considerate of the situation.
It's why the simple daily act of getting dressed is a small act of defiance. In a world that would rather pressure you to conform, it’s a way of saying no to the endless shopping and insatiable desire we’ve grown accustomed to comparing ourselves to.
I need another…
Pair of jeans.
Pair of shoes.
Summer dress for that wedding.
But it takes practice, getting to know ourselves better. And in that practice, we build the confidence to dress for ourselves, not others.
At its core, confidence is the belief that, regardless of your look, you are enough. It’s a steadier way of living, when we are deeply rooted in who we are, we don’t let others' opinions dictate what we wear.
It’s a little like being a parent. It’s rare to immediately feel like one the moment you’re granted the title, we become them in the tiniest moments day after day in the raising of kids. Similarly, when we embrace our personal style in getting dressed every day it spans far past our closet. Asking for what we want and finding the agency to say no when we don’t — cultivating a more free and beautiful life.
