Capsule wardrobe 101:
build with what you own.

A capsule wardrobe is a focused collection of clothes that work together for your everyday life, a season or a trip. Start with pieces you already own, make outfits you want to wear, and add something only when it fills a useful gap.

How many pieces do you need?

Enough to get dressed for the life you have. Your weather, dress codes and laundry routine all matter. A week away might need a small edit; a season with work, weekends and changing temperatures may need more.

There is room to find your own number.

In our review of more than 6,000 recently used Cladwell capsules, the midpoint was around 30 clothing and shoe pieces. Sizes varied widely. That describes what people put in their capsules, not a rule for yours.

About this research

Cladwell capsule review, October 2026. We looked at the current contents of nonempty focused capsules used between July and October, excluding whole closets. Shoes were counted; accessories were not. Saved contents do not tell us how often every piece was worn or which capsule size works best.

If you like the structure of a 33-piece capsule, try it. Give yourself room to adjust it as you learn. Decide what you are counting, especially shoes, accessories and coats, so the number means something useful to you.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

Start in your closet. Give the clothes a chance to work together before making a shopping list.

  1. Choose the days you are dressing for

Start with your actual week, a season or an upcoming trip. Think about work, home, going out and the weather. Include the shoes and layers those days call for.

  2. Pull the pieces you already reach for

Choose clothes that fit comfortably and suit those plans. Build around favorite bottoms, tops, dresses if you wear them, layers and shoes. Leave the rest of your closet available.

  3. Put complete outfits together

Try the pieces together, including shoes. A top does not need to match every bottom, but each piece should have a role in an outfit you want to wear. Save the combinations you like.

  4. Look for useful gaps

If an outfit needs a layer or a different pair of shoes, check the rest of your closet first. Borrow from another capsule, swap a piece or leave the outfit out. Buy only when you can explain how the addition helps.

  5. Wear it, then adjust

Notice what you repeat, what stays unworn and what you wish you had on laundry day. Log outfits if it helps you remember. Keep your favorites and change the pieces that are not earning their place.

One closet.
More than one capsule.

Your work, weekend and travel capsules can overlap. A favorite pair of trousers might belong in all three. You can change the outfit around a piece you love without replacing the piece itself.

That is what we see in Cladwell, too: nearly everyone with multiple recently used capsules in our review shared at least one item between them.

Take this black tank, olive trousers and tan sandals. You might wear the trousers with a shirt for work, then put the tank and sandals in a weekend capsule. Start by looking for those possibilities in your own clothes.

Choose colors you want to wear together

A capsule can include bright colors, prints and familiar neutrals. Look at the pieces beside each other and try the outfits on. You do not need a fixed share of beige, black or any other color.

If you would like a starting palette, take the color palette quiz. Use the result for ideas, then keep the colors and combinations you enjoy wearing.
