Simple Days
They say our wedding day is the most beautiful we’ll ever feel… dolled up and fancy in a high-dollar dress.
But if I’m being totally honest, the days in which I’ve felt and looked the best are more simple than that. It’s when I put on an outfit that matches my mood and my environment, that feels 100% like me. Sweats on a snowy day or well-worn jeans and a plain white tee to grab coffee.
I recently went on a girls’ trip to Quebec City, Canada. Living out all my French dreams, I expected myself to solve all of life’s mysteries on this getaway.
While we were there we visited a Siberian spa. (Note: if you haven’t been to one, start looking today.) It was magical, like something in a movie. My friends and I were talking later about how wonderful and relaxing it was. Staring out of a heated igloo onto a flowing river bubbling over rocks while swinging in a hammock…and no, I’m not exaggerating this nature scene!
But, serene though it was, none of us had any big life epiphanies.
I think, in part, it had to do with not feeling at home. I’m most at ease sitting in my favorite chair in the corner of my living room with a blanket and space heater at my feet. That’s where my shoulders drop a little lower and magic occasionally happens. Ideas are spurred on, epiphanies unveiled.
It’s rarely in the biggest moments that I feel like my truest self; more often, it’s in the simple ones. I learned this lesson a long time ago when it came to my wardrobe—simplifying helped me find my authentic style.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved everything about my wedding dress (and still do!), and that spa was a real dream. But I also don’t think you have to make big plans like traveling the world or saying yes to the dress in order to discover yourself.
I just think it’s much more simple than that.
Let’s have a little fun with it…
