What are the best clothes for a man's body type?

The short answer

Fit at the shoulder and the trouser break does more than any body-type rule. Buy for the widest measurement, have the rest altered, and choose proportion over hiding — a jacket that fits the shoulders and a trouser that ends cleanly on the shoe will out-perform any styling trick.

Fit at the shoulder first

The shoulder seam is the one thing a tailor can’t easily move, so it’s the measurement to buy for. Everything else — the waist, the sleeve, the trouser leg — can be taken in. Buy for the widest measurement and alter the rest, and a mid-priced jacket will read better than an expensive one that doesn’t sit right.

Proportion beats concealment

Most body-type advice is really advice about hiding, which rarely works and reliably makes people self-conscious. Proportion is the more useful idea: where the eye lands, and whether the lines of the outfit run in the same direction.

  • Trouser break. A clean break, just touching the shoe, is the single biggest improvement available to most men.
  • Jacket length. It should cover the seat. Shorter reads fashion-led, longer reads borrowed.
  • Layer lengths. Layers should end at different points. Two hems finishing in the same place cuts the body in half.

Color does the rest

Once the fit is right, the thing that changes how a garment reads is whether its color suits you. Near the face, a color that fights your undertone will undo good tailoring. Further down — trousers, shoes, a bag — it matters far less, which is where to put anything you love but that doesn’t agree with your palette.

  • What should a man wear to a summer wedding?

Lighter cloth at the same formality. A linen or lightweight wool suit in a paler shade for daytime, a white or pale blue shirt, and leather shoes that will survive grass. Heat changes the fabric and the colour, never how dressed up you're.

  • What should a man wear to a wedding?

Read the invitation first — black tie, formal, and "smart casual" mean three different outfits. Where no code is given, a well-fitted suit in navy or mid-grey with a white or pale shirt is right for almost every wedding, and the season decides the fabric rather than the formality.
