Capsule wardrobe 101:
build with what you own.

A capsule wardrobe is a focused collection of clothes that work together for your everyday life, a season or a trip. Start with pieces you already own, make outfits you want to wear, and add something only when it fills a useful gap.

How many pieces do you need?

Enough to get dressed for the life you have. Your weather, dress codes and laundry routine all matter. A week away might need a small edit; a season with work, weekends and changing temperatures may need more.

There is room to find your own number.

In our review of recently used Cladwell capsules, the midpoint was around 30 clothing and shoe pieces. Sizes varied widely. That describes what people put in their capsules, not a rule for yours.

About this research

Cladwell capsule review, October 2026. We looked at the current contents of nonempty focused capsules used between July and October, excluding whole closets. Shoes were counted; accessories were not. Saved contents do not tell us how often every piece was worn or which capsule size works best.

If you like the structure of a 33-piece capsule, try it. Give yourself room to adjust it as you learn. Decide what you are counting, especially shoes, accessories and coats, so the number means something useful to you.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

Start in your closet. Give the clothes a chance to work together before making a shopping list.

  1. Choose the days you are dressing for

Start with your actual week, a season or an upcoming trip. Think about work, home, going out and the weather. Include the shoes and layers those days call for.

  2. Pull the pieces you already reach for

Choose clothes that fit comfortably and suit those plans. Build around favorite bottoms, tops, dresses if you wear them, layers and shoes. Leave the rest of your closet available.

  3. Put complete outfits together

Try the pieces together, including shoes. A top does not need to match every bottom, but each piece should have a role in an outfit you want to wear. Save the combinations you like.

  4. Look for useful gaps

If an outfit needs a layer or a different pair of shoes, check the rest of your closet first. Borrow from another capsule, swap a piece or leave the outfit out. Buy only when you can explain how the addition helps.

  5. Wear it, then adjust

Notice what you repeat, what stays unworn and what you wish you had on laundry day. Log outfits if it helps you remember. Keep your favorites and change the pieces that are not earning their place.

Build a capsule wardrobe in Cladwell

A capsule wardrobe builder helps you choose a focused group of clothes and see how you can wear them together. In Cladwell, you can organize pieces from your closet into capsules, find outfit ideas, save favorites and log what you wear. Start with the clothes you reach for, then adjust the collection as you learn what works.

  1. Choose pieces you own

Give your capsule a purpose: work, weekends or a trip. Start with familiar clothes that fit those days. Your capsule roadmap brings owned pieces and suggested additions together, so you can see what is already there before considering anything new.

  2. Find outfits to wear

Look through outfit ideas from your capsule. Check the shoes, layers and weather as well as the clothes. Save combinations you want to try; you can keep a piece even if it does not match everything else.

  3. Keep what works

Use the bookmark to save a favorite and Wear today to log an outfit. Notice what you repeat and what you miss. Swap a piece from your closet before deciding whether a gap needs something new.

Your work, weekend and travel capsules can overlap. A favorite pair of trousers might belong in all three. You can change the outfit around a piece you love without replacing the piece itself.

That is what we see in Cladwell, too: nearly everyone with multiple recently used capsules in our review shared at least one item between them.

Try two complete outfits around the same olive trousers. These are examples to adapt with similar pieces you already own:

  • A warm weekend: black tank, olive trousers and tan sandals. Add a light layer if the evening cools down.
  • A casual workday: white button-down shirt, the same olive trousers and black loafers. Add a cardigan for a cool office, if you need one.

Try each outfit on and check comfort, weather and your dress code. Can you wear the trousers again between washes? That helps you decide whether both outfits fit the week you are planning.

Choose colors you want to wear together

A capsule can include bright colors, prints and familiar neutrals. Look at the pieces beside each other and try the outfits on. You do not need a fixed share of beige, black or any other color.

If you would like a starting palette, take the color palette quiz. Use the result for ideas, then keep the colors and combinations you enjoy wearing.
