How many items should a capsule wardrobe have?

The short answer

Between 30 and 40 pieces for one season, excluding underwear, activewear and outerwear. But the number is the wrong target — a capsule works when every top goes with every bottom, and that's a question of coverage, not count.

Why the number varies so much

Published capsule counts run from Project 333’s strict 33 to loose interpretations north of 50. The spread isn’t disagreement about clothes — it’s disagreement about what’s being counted. Some include shoes and outerwear; some count only what hangs in one closet; some count per season and some per year.

More usefully: the right number depends on how many distinct dress codes your week actually contains. Someone with one is fine at 25. Someone who moves between a formal office, a building site and a christening needs 45 and isn’t doing it wrong.

The test that beats counting

Lay out every top and every bottom. Count the pairs that genuinely work. If a third of them don’t, adding pieces won’t help — the problem is that your colors don’t agree with each other, and a smaller wardrobe in one palette will out-perform a larger one in three.

This is why we stopped leading with counts. Two wardrobes of 35 pieces can give you 12 outfits or 90, so the number was never the thing worth measuring.

  • What should be in a spring and summer capsule wardrobe?

Around 30 to 35 pieces for the warm half of the year: roughly ten tops, five bottoms, three layers, two or three dresses and four pairs of shoes. Build it in one neutral family so the pieces combine, and add color through the tops rather than the trousers.

  • What should be on a capsule wardrobe checklist?

A working checklist counts categories, not pieces: enough tops to pair with every bottom, bottoms in one neutral family, two or three layers, shoes that suit the bottoms you own, and one outfit you would be comfortable wearing somewhere formal. Coverage is the test, not a total.

  • How do I start building a capsule wardrobe?

Start with what you already own. Catalog the closet, wear it for a fortnight and notice what you actually reach for, then let go of what stayed on the rail and fill only the gaps that unlock outfits. Starting in your own closet rather than the shops is what makes it stick.

  • How do you actually build a capsule wardrobe?

In four passes: catalog everything you own, wear it for a fortnight and notice what you reach for, let go of what stayed on the rail and doesn't pair with anything, then fill only the gaps that unlock outfits. Starting in your own closet rather than the shops is what makes it stick.

  • How do I build a capsule wardrobe for my actual life?

Count the dress codes your week really contains, not the ones you aspire to. Someone with one needs about 25 pieces; someone moving between a formal office, site work and weekends needs closer to 45 and isn't doing it wrong.
